Turn off your iPhone to keep it happy

Here's a real simple tip to keep your iPhone (or your iPod touch) happy and running in tip- top shape. Reboot your iPhone (by turning it on or off) at least once or twice a week. I depend on my trusty iPhone for so much, so I try to remember to do it once a day. It's especially important to do if you frequently download and try a lot of new apps or if you run memory intensive apps, such as games, video, or navigation. Even just emailing and surfing all day long can scramble your iPhone's brain. Remember, your iPhone is a mini computer running a complex operating system. A quick reboot can often fix most glitches and it will restart fresh and ready to do all you demand from it.

NJ seagulls love PIZZA!

I was eating a slice of pizza in my car (from Rudy's in Closter, NJ) and noticed a flock of seagulls (at least I think that's what they were) gathering outside my car window. How did they know I was eating pizza? As soon as I rolled down my window, they all started to look at me with hunger in their eyes. I felt like Tippi Hedren from Alfred Hitchcock's THE BIRDS. I tossed out a chunk of pizza (Sicilian if you're wondering) and they loved it - except for one guy who kept sitting on the hood of my car. Maybe he was their leader? Maybe he had a big lunch and wasn't hungry?

ObamaCare omen? iPhone GPS app lists crematorium as part of health care

I just dowloaded an open-source GPS navigation app for my iPhone called ROADEE. For $1.99 it's a steal and I'll post a review soon.

When playing around with it looking to find POI's - Points of Interest - in my area, it was curious to see CREMATORIUM listed under the HEALTH CARE menu. Perhaps an omen of ObamaCare to come? :)

Video: iPhone 3GS takes flight on RC plane

"Hey, let's duct tape my new $200 iPhone 3GS to the bottom of my radio controled model airplane and see what happens!" Well, that's exactly what some guy did and he's got the amazing video to prove it.

iPhone app TimeLapse makes time fly

I was working on the CBS Evening News with Russ Mitchell this past Sunday (7/12/09) and made a little test video with an iPhone app called TimeLapse.  A total of 236 photos were automatically taken, one every 5 seconds. The photos were imported into QuickTime Pro, which created a 20 second video that shows the activity in the studio during the 30 minute broadcast.

iPhone Autostitch panorama: Harrington Park

I just created this panorama of one of the Little League fields in Harrington Park, NJ with my iPhone and the Autostitch app. 10 pictures were shot handheld using just the camera. I overlapped each shot a bit. Photos were then loaded into Autostitch, which took less than a minute to finish. I used Zipix Lite to auto correct the picture and CropForFree to trim the jaggy edges, which are created during the stitching process. Both these programs are free from the App Store.

iPhone panorama

Autostitch is an amazing iPhone app that puts together a series of photos and turns them into a seamless panorama. This is a view of my backyard, as seen from my upper bathroom window. I think I took 7 pictures for this panorama. Autostitch is extremely friendly and easy to use. It costs $1.99 and it's worth every penny.
